What’s making me happy this week:

The same thing as a lot of us, I imagine – I was at a No Kings protest yesterday and despite reasonable fears about what kind of bullshit Greg Abbott was going to pull on us involving wild misuse of the national guard the only officers we saw were HPD and, oddly, some park rangers, and they were all staying very chill considering they were dealing with a crowd of around 15,000 people. No scary riot gear or batons, just the usual level of watching for trouble and corralling traffic away from the march route. They weren’t even cracking down on people who had signs on sticks – I’ve never seen so many people getting away with those at a Houston march before and it seems like they decided to err on the side of not fucking with peaceful protesters over enforcing that ordinance. And good call, because no one was looking to use their sign as a weapon except in the rhetorical sense. Despite the horrifying news from Minnesota (which one of the speakers broke to us at the march before calling for a moment of silence) it was a very heartening day. I didn’t even see the usual sad enclave of one or two counter protestors corralled across the street like we normally get.
