Neurotic Owl

flying through clouds of uncertainty on wings of existential dread

Weekly thingy and some random shit.

Hello, my sparkly jeweled monitor lizards.  It has been a WEEK and I regret not posting earlier but holy shit has everything just been dumb and chaotic.  So end of last week was Comicpalooza (yay!  hooray!  NERD PARTY!) and a great time was had by (I think probably) all.  The cosplayers who FREAKED THE FUCK OUT about the new prop gun policy could have saved their energy, I saw plenty of prop guns go through weapons check no problem.  Anyone bitching about the addition of bag check, ditto.  IT TOOK AN EXTRA FIVE SECONDS, Y’ALL, CALM THE FUCK DOWN.  Seriously, if your prop gun is so convincingly real that it couldn’t make it through the check, maybe it was best to leave it home?  Do you really want to be the person (if god forbid something terrible should happen) who the police mistake for the shooter?  Also, consider that no black nerd with any sense of the world whatsoever is walking through downtown with a realistic looking gun EVER and be grateful for your fucking privilege, because you don’t have to worry about being shot for holding a cell phone or a comb or nothing at all.

ANYWAY.

While a lot of nerds can be super gatekeep-y and toxic, I find that convention nerds tend to be a super fun and happy group because we’re all there for a joyous weekend of weirdness.  Either that, or I’m reasonably good at avoiding the shitty ones.  Probably the latter, honestly.  So, Tom Holland was adorable and lacks boundaries, Krysten Ritter was hilarious, Brent Spiner was an entertaining dick and Jeri Ryan and LeVar Burton were wildly delightful.  LeVar got the whole crown singing the Reading Rainbow theme, so that made my heart happy.  Jeri Ryan refused to let Spiner interrupt her and just kept talking over him YES DO THE THING YOU MAGNIFICENT EX-BORG.  Artist made great art, vendors vended, Lego porn was cleverly hidden.

Oh, and my new map dress was something of a hit.  It was hard to move anywhere without stopping every three seconds to have my picture taken, which is both flattering and mildly frustrating eventually (but more flattering).  I, as usual, failed to get a pic for myself, so super big thanks to my friend C for this one:

And to Megaship Cosplay Photography, who you should go find on the social medias for this one, which is, please note, their property:

Obviously I did decide the little shell lights were too much for that wig in the end — I’ll find a use for them eventually.  I need to take in that corset considerably (again), but otherwise, success!  I have a plan for restyling the wig so it’s lighter weight, and I need to better secure my bumroll, but everything was pretty comfortable all day.

Also, right before the con I cut the SHIT out of my finger, and it seemed like it was probably healing okay during the con, but started looking infected Tuesday during the day, so now I’m on anticbiotics and it’s healing nicely again.  And Mom’s birthday was yesterday, so I was over at her place for dinner and cake and gifts last night.  It’s been a bunch at once, is what I’m saying, and while my hurt finger is on my right hand, fancy sewing still really needs both hands, so none of that lately.

Places to buy stuff!

  • TEEPUBLIC: mostly t-shirts, a few other products.  Watch for sales, when shirts drop from $20 to $14!
  • REDBUBBLE: Just, I don’t know, a ton of different stuff.  T-shirts are more expensive than Teepublic, but there are a lot more options.
  • AMAZON: 2 colouring books, and now, a nearly-complete cartoon collection!  (Till I draw more.)

The Neurotic Owl Compendium: still flying through clouds of uncertainty on wings of existential dreadGeeky Gals Coloring BookDaydreams & Whimsies: A Most Fantastical Coloring Book

  • ETSY: beaded jewelry, bags of creepy tiny dolls, and The Neurotic Owl Tarot

Did I miss something?  I think that’s everything.
