So while picking a quote for my Coraline illustration, I did a Google search for ‘Coraline quotes’ to see what resonated with other people, and I found something HORRIFYING.
(Don’t open the door! It’s the internet!) See, at the beginning of the book, Neil Gaiman uses a lovely G.K.Chesterton quote: “Fairytales are more than true – not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” Which is actually paraphrased, but still. It’s a quote, he credits the author, all is well. Unfortunately, it would appear that a lot of readers either don’t understand attribution or just googled ‘Coraline quote’, because what I found is this:
There’s a ton more, but I’m not spending time adding to the pile of stupid. I would like to point out, however, that at least one of the images I found is a tattoo. A TATTOO. Someone took the time to etch the fucking thing on their skin, but couldn’t be bothered to crack open the book to page one to check the attribution. A lot of this probably goes back to Goodreads, which definitely lists this as a Neil Gaiman quote. Sigh.
