Neurotic Owl

The weekly thingy and a very silly project!

I think I mentioned this last week – I had a solid week off of work and spent a fair bit of it FINALLY starting to redecorate the huge dollhouse I got on Marketplace for $5 a couple of years ago. (BTW it seems like this kind of big Barbie-scale house is pretty regularly available secondhand for super cheap as long as you’re ok with it needing some love – once kids outgrow a toy that takes up this much space people just want someone to come haul them away. Don’t attempt it in a Honda Civic, though.)

Anyhow! I’m aiming to do this with mostly recycled, found, or inexpensive supplies. So far the siding is all cut down from matboard scrap, as are the window frames. The shingles are Kraft paper price tags brushed down with a mix of modpodge and this gold/black color shift acrylic I had already – I bought the tags but they were cheap and I used almost the whole 1000 pack. The trim on the front is a plastic bead trim from my stash and some of those tiny Sculpey flowers I was obsessively molding last year, all painted with the same acrylic to look like ironwork. And the main house paint is, in fact, house paint – the bright aqua from my living room mixed with some of the lavender from my bedroom to soften it a bit.The window glass is just packaging from some dollar store paper doilies I picked up thinking I could use them as a base for gingerbread with puff paint – that failed, thus the bead trim instead, but I’m sure I’ll use the doilies for something else eventually.

Places to buy stuff!

Did I miss something?  I think that’s everything.

What’s making me happy this week:

The show opening Saturday evening went splendidly, and then I got to go with friends to a delicious dinner at Tejas brewery next door, and then Sunday I saw more friends for the VAA craft social so just a massively social weekend for me.

Also, I got my list of shows updated today – right now you can see my work at Sawyer Yards in Houston and online in the WCA’s LGBTQ+ caucus show, The Spectrum of She. Pop over to the exhibitions page for the full list and links.
